Zambezi Wildlife Trust has constructed two washing stations in Chijata Village and Mugulameno Village, and 8 water access points in Chijata, Mushonganende, Chimusambo, Mugulameno, Chapanga and Chiuye villages. Incidents of human-wildlife conflict with crocodiles and hippos, issues of detergent run-off and erosion in these areas have been almost completely eliminated.

THE IMPORTANCE OF WASHING STATIONS

Detergent Run-Off

When residents wash laundry and kitchenware, detergent run-off into the river and its delicate ecosystem is an unfortunate byproduct.

Human-Wildlife Conflict

When collecting water from or washing items at the river, residents are susceptible to incidents with both crocodiles and hippos. Death from river-related human-wildlife conflict is a sad reality.

Erosion

Erosion is already an issue for the Zambezi River, and as residents wash their items sand banks are even more vulnerable to collapse.

SOLAR SOLUTION

The Zambezi River has long been the source of water - and life - for both the wildlife and residents of the Zambezi Valley. However, communities washing and collecting water from the river creates a multitude of problems for both people and the ecosystem.

By using a simple solar powered water pump, Zambezi Wildlife Trust was able to build multiple washing stations, water collection points and water towers. Bringing water to more accessible areas makes life easier for residents and reduces detergent runoff, erosion and incidents of human-wildlife conflict for the river.
